How do you insure your Dino?

Post by abarth4 »

I'm curious as to how members of this forum insure their Dino's. With such a specialized car that is appreciating in value, what methods/companies do you use? Do you use specialist collector car insurance companies or more mainstream companies with specialized policies? I have my car insured through our normal insurance carrier (State Farm Insurance) however, it's under a special stated value policy. This is a policy where you agree on a value with your agent and the car is insured for that value. You need a good agent who understands collector cars that don't normally show up on the everyday driver car insurance "radar". In my case, my agent knows my car, knows what it is, has been out to see and photograph it and we've agreed on an appraised value. From time to time I change the insured value as the market value of the car increases. However, I'm afraid that as the value becomes greater, I may need to go the specialized insurance route... So far I have had no problems with the way I'm insuring my car but I'm curious as to what others do for their cars. The 2.4 spider listed for sale in Monaco at 110,000 Euro ($150,000) is a pretty scary number... if it sells for anything near that (unlikely?)

Hi Charlie,

I moved over to Hagerty
- reasonable premium
- they exist because of classic cars - they don't just "have one guy in the office who does the classic stuff"
- agreed value policies
- no restriction on use (i.e. no need to prove you have a car to commute in or max annual mileage)
(note: they might ask you about mileage, but it's not limited in the policy once you have it)

very happy.

Thanks for the replies. I had the opportunity to attend the Amelia Island Concours a couple of weeks ago and talked to multiple classic car vendors.... Hagerty included. There was a big difference in companies. Responses ranged from a complete understanding of what a Fiat Dino was to .... (I'm not making this up) a question... "Is it a fast car?" From my discussions I quickly narrowed it down to Hagerty. It even helped to include my 71 Fiat 124 spider in their quote (multi car discount) That being said, It's still cheaper by a few hundred dollars to insure through State Farm for the same stated value. I'll probably wind up w. Hagerty since they're the more specialized company. I think my insured value is moving out of the "comfort zone" for State Farm. We'll see!

Just insured with Hagerty. There was a little back and forth over value but we came to a compromise that I think everyone was happy with.
