I'm trying to get hold of the owner for a photo of the chassis plate - I'll post it if I get it.

Hi Eric,
It's been long believed that production of the 2400 spider ended in January 1972 with chassis's 1562-1583 being produced in that month. Your table shows production running right thru' 1972 with just 4 cars produced between Feb-Dec 1972. Are you certain you have the correct information. I'm still very much inclined to believe the original data, with production ending in january 1972,
Regards, Brian Boxall BS1319 & 1470. I also owned 1562 (Jan 1972) a few years back.

Hello Brian,

These data are coming from FIAT factory and are real figures. The last car, VIN nr 1583, has been produced January 1973. It was the only Spider 2400 produced that year.

This all-new production info is of course very interesting, but how likely is it, FIAT decided producing just a handful of Dino Spiders during a whole year?

This info means, the Pininfarina plant should have been able producing just one finished Spider body during March 1972 - then stopping production
for 4 months - and during a final production period of 6 months building just three Spider bodies more!
In almost any kind of industrial production, the economical losses would be huge. Neither FIAT nor Pininfarina could have been interested in such a
unpractical scenario.
If this info is coming from FIAT - maybe it is some kind of selling figures coming from the FIAT dealerships? One of several reasons for stopping the
Fiat Dino production was the decreasing interest from the buing public. (There are many Fiat Dino 2400´s being buildt one year, but having the first
registration as from the next "model year", which tells us the cars often sat long periods by the dealers, before finally sold.)

Hello guys,

These figures are real production data, no sales data.
The low 2400 spider volume was due to lack of interest form the buyers.

The low interest was created by the bad quality of the former Dino 2000 version.
Problems with, i.e. cooling, of the 2000 version caused a bad name for Dino in that time.
The improved 2400 version, unfortunately, did not profit anymore from the upgrades it got.

Yes you are right; the economical losses were very huge on those cars, but in that time it could be compensated by the real big volumes of the success story models from; FIAT 124,125, 126, 127 and 128 etc .
At the end, the FIAT Dino was only created to get the engine homologated for Ferrari Formula 2 purposes.

Best regards

Thank you very much for this information...

As there is a natural gap between production and first registration. Mine is e.g. the No. 1312 being first registered in Germany in May 1971. Coming from your production list this one was already produced in November 1970.

In general I am amazed how little interest in Fiat Dino Spiders was left on the market around 1972 or later as the sales went down exponentially. Leo Aumüller in Germany bought his 2.4 Spider in Switzerland brand new (orange) 10 years later from a Fiat Dealer. No one showed interest in this car at that time.

Sigh... good old days.

I didn't notice until today that there is something strange about my serial number. My VIN number on my Dino 2.0 coupe says 135 FC ... This is odd. I haven't found the production plate inside the car. Can somebody tell me where to find the 3 serial numbers on the car?

Tnx

Reading the original owner´s manual, the Dino´s serial number (135 AS/AC/BS/BC 000 xxxx) is to be found at one place only - stamped into the right side
front inner wing (close to the shock absorber upper support).

Placed closely to this stamped-in number, there is a small aluminium plate with info over:
Homologation number: This was the main reason for building the Fiat Dino, by the way...
Car type number: AS/AC/BS/BC 135, The actual serial number: 0000 xxxx
The engine type number: 135 b - indicating a 1987 cc engine / 135 c - indicating a 2418 cc engine
Spare parts number: helps deciding which version of different parts your Dino has...

(Pininfarina also numbered their Spider bodies with a bodyshell number, but this is not the same as the actual serial number (AS/BS 000 xxxx).
This "body number" is stamped at the bonnet, the rear boot lid, and the actual body - in the boot.)

Hoping this will help you! / Dinoswede

For the coupe 2000 there seems to be a no. 3685, which is stamped into the bonnet, and from pictures of the car there is no doubt that this is a AC coupe 2000. However, as the car apparently was stolen during som point in time, the VIN no. 23417774075 was was stamped as chassis no. Somewhat confusing. What do you think?
