Brian,

You may well be correct about that final drive ratio---I was quoting on a sometimes faulty memory of the Mike Morris book when I wrote 0.74. You said you had the "taller' ratio fitted on your last two Dinos---where were you able to purchase that 5th gear set?

Thanks for pointing me at a source...

Thanks Tobi,

You are a mine of information as always. Huh, so I have a set of valuable Ferrari rims but I seek originality. At least economically I find myself on the right side of the equation!

Bert,
They were available in limited supply from Superformance (UK) quite a few years ago (10+) but only a few sets were manufactured. I think SF are planning to start producing them again, so suggest you contact Colin Sowter, the proprietor, and ask him. UK phone # is 01992 445300, and they have a website, of course. Failing that, locate a Sunbeam Lotus ZF box, which is identical to the Dino, but has that long (tall) 5th gear,

Hi Brian,

I hadn't realised that the gearbox in the 2400 was the same as the Sunbeam Lotus, and so many other cars..

It seems like there are a few specialists out there, manufacturing new parts, specifically for Race or Rally, I would have thought it would be easier for someone to buy from them, rather than SF having a batch made..

Cheers

I think these boxes are used in many many different cars. At least I've already seen a bunch of different cars with the zf s5-18/3, also with different ratio's on the ID-plate.
It's also used on cars like Opel Ascona/Kaddet/ many common Fords etc.etc. I think if you search a bit you will find a box from from some Kadett or something with the ratio you would like, most likely even on a junkyard if your still lucky....(I think, never searched for it though)
Guess it will be a cheaper option than having gears remanufactured.

This one is used on Maserati 228 / Volvo and some more.

Hi,
That gearbox ID plate shows the 5th gear to be 0.795:1 which is the "long" 5th gear that reduces the top gear revs by 9%, so it would seem that the maserati Biturbo box would suit our needs,

If my memory serves me well alfa montreal and Sei also have 0.795. And it seems like a manual version of some weird off-road vehicle called Pinzgauer TD has 0.74
Also stuff like Volvo C306, Iveco daily have been using the same box....no clue about ratio's though but with some googling you might find some good options with a variety of models and ratios.

I often heard about some versions of the Biturbo, too. But be aware that the internals of these gearboxes are often a bit different. It's usually not just a quick exchange of a set of gears. I've never did this conversion personally, but this was mentioned by some gearbox experts at our last technical seminar.

The wheel rims were 14 inch on all Spider and Coupé models.
The hubcap on the Dino 206 and 246, as well as on the Spider and Coupé are the same with the exception of the centre part. In the case of a 206 or 246 the decorative centre part should be "DINO" and for the Spider and Coupé "FIAT". ( Cromodora wheels.)
As far as I know, 16"wheels were never used as OEM!

Hi, this is a belated reply to the two questions here - logo on wheels and the ZF ratios. I have six wheels - I bought two from a Dino 246GT owner and they are post-1972 with the Dino logo on the rim. I bought four from a guy who was restoring his 308 GT4 and there were two early Dino wheels that had FIAT logos on the rim and also two early 308GT4 wheels. The 308GT4 wheels look the same as our FIAT Dino wheels except they have a raised boss in the centre instead of the dish that all FIAT and 206/246 wheels have. They are designed to not take a hubcap but only the plastic Dino logo in the very centre.

The issue of ZF ratios is interesting and I found that the Bedford van used a 4 and 5 speed ZF - so it may be a source of some parts:
Ratios on the Bedford van ZF box as follows:-

Fleet CF2/230 & CF2/250 - 3.92, 2.19, 1.43, 1.00 & 0.81:1
CF2/280, 350 & 350L - 4.69, 2.51, 1.48, 1.00 & 0.81:1
The ZF box has, as standard, provision for a heavy duty 20hp power take off to be fitted.
