Removing rear Brake Disc on Spyder

Post by jsmith324 »

How do you remove the disc to get it reground. The front discs were easy but you can't get to the bolts on the rear of the rear discs. Do the axle have to be pulled? If so, you will need a special tool, right? I'm trying to redo all the brakes. Help

Answering your question re 2 litre Spider rear brake discs;
If you have a Dino with standard 5 wheel studs system, you must withdraw the complete drive shaft with outer bearing from the rear axle
tube. This should be fairly easily done without any special tools, as the outer bearing should just slide out of its seating in the axle tube.
(You first must loosen the caliper from its caliper carrier plate to get access to the bolts holding the caliper carrier to the axle tube!)
If you have a Dino with wheels with central wing nut system, you will have two alternativs; Follow the description above - or - loosen
the hub locking nut (with locking pin) first, then using either Fiat original tool no A 47048 (!) or an ordinary 3-leg pulling tool to loosen
the wheel hub from the drive shaft. It is probably not a good idea using the brake disc outer rim to pull the wheel hub assembly from
the drive shaft, as the brake disc can fairly easily crack or bend. It is probably safer using some kind of big nut fitting the central wing
nut threads, to get a tight "grip" of the wheel hub.
I hope I have described this correctly, I have overhauled my 2 litre Spider totally, so I have done all this myself, but it is many years ago,
and I have looked in my spare parts catalogue and the original Fiat "Specifications and Servicing Instructions" to fresh up my knowledge
a bit. Hoping this will help!

Thanks for the information. Where can you get the tool you described. It is not available at a regular auto parts place... Do you know of a place to rent one?

I have another problem. I have tried to remove a stuck piston from the brake caliper. Haven't had any luck blowing it out with air pressure. Even 150lbs pressure didn't do it. The guys at the machine shop said to use a grease gun. However, we can't find a correct grease fitting that would screw into the caliper. A straight 10mm would not work. Any idea on a correct fitting for the grease gun. Neither 6, 8, or 10mm does not work.. Any suggestions?
