Dino 2400 Coupe -71

Post by JPohja »

Hello,

I am new member here, just bought me Dino 2400 Coupe 1971. Driven 142000km. Some rust in sills and in passengers side front under bumper.
Some pics yet here: http://harrasteet.1g.fi/kuvat/Fiat+Dino ... +6.6.2015/

Not so many Dinos in Finland so I have never heard how engine should run after starting. Mine has quite loud winding noise when cold, not so laud after engine has warmed up. Pulls nice and sound in high rews is absolutely georgious :). Is it from timing chain or what?

Sorry about my english but its way better than my German or Italian ;)

Hi Jukka, and welcome on board!

Nice color, not very common for Dino's. Did you find it in Finland? I hope the rust is not too bad since replacement panels are not easy to find. The engine is the real beauty, and it is important to have it warm before running it up in the revs. Concerning the music it makes, you should hear the fuel pump spin and the dinoplex whine when you put the key to "on". One the engine is started, it should not be overly noisy, If the timing chains are rattling, you should check that they are properly tightened. It's easy to do and will avoid them skipping a cog and causing real damage. The procedure is in the owner's manual, but I or someone can explain it if you do not have one. If you hear clicking or tapping from the valve train, time to check the valve clearances.

best,

Dario

Hello Dario,

Thanks! Color is original and I intend to keep it that way. So seventies :) I purchase it from Finnland laast week.

When I turn key ON nothing happens. Fuel pump starts after starter turns around. No whine from Dinoplex either. But it starts just fine!

Here is sound when just started: http://harrasteet.1g.fi/kuvat/Fiat+Dino ... 31_Pro.mp4
And here when engine is warm: http://harrasteet.1g.fi/kuvat/Fiat+Dino ... 58_Pro.mp4
I think chain can be little too tight?

Is it possible to find new seats and door panels somewhere? And mouldings to doors?

Congratulations very nice colour indeed and a good Decision to Keep it. If you have the Small dinoplex the whining is just a very high frequent noise. The typical dino Sound comes From the two chains and their drivewheels. If you Do not have a record on the maintenance that was done you should consider a major maintenance: change liquids (Engine and gearbox oil, rear axle oils (Stick to original specification) brake fluid, Check valve clearance, chain Tension and ignition Timing as well as the Distributor and its advance curve and finally your carbs
setup. Together with the correct wheel alignment it will bring you full pleasure!

I have only rear interior panels in black for a 2400 coupe. If you need parts try here. Its amazing what parts are still able to get if needed (and with a certain Set of patience). KR Thomas

Yes it's small dinoplex (have big as spare parts too). Is valve clearance adjusted by screw or by bits? It's puffing while lifting pedal, I tought it's coming from loose joint in exhaust pipes or flanges? How difficult it is to adjust carbs, not specialist in that..

I just made little trip to curved roads and it's just pure pleasure to drive with high rews :) Brakes are much better that I expected!

Drivers seats cushion is dead, is it still availeable somewhere?

Valve clearence is adjustet by shims between cam and tappet. Its a time consuming job on the dino - when you are trained in one day, better a weekend. Lots of screws and gaskets to be mounted, some places are really hard to reach. But then you can also check the timing and the chain tension.

It could be that you drive to lean, when you have these noises when lifting the throttle. Do you have some experience with classic cars?

Interiour parts are hard to find, originals not available anymore, if lucky, you might get good good used things. But you can of course renew things at special shops.

Enjoy driving but make sure first to really warm up the engine before revving otherwise you cause extensive cam wear.

Shims, ok. Like my Quattro. Not my job :(

There is a leak somewhere in exhaust manifold, I can hear it even when engine is warm. This can cause puffing too. Got to check it tomorrow.
When key is turned to "ON" position, fuelpump does not rotate, turning it 1mm more it rotates, maybe ignition switch is worn little.
Idling is uneven too so carbs has to be adjusted, have not got any airflow meter, what are you quys using?

There is a little play in steering too. In middle not so bad but when turned to limit, big play. Steering box has no play so where does this come??

I love it allready :)

Don't worry, this behaviour is as designed.

OK.
Is there somewhere in internet instruction for valve clearance adjusting? And timing?
