Wipers intermittent mode

Post by Bijan »

Hi!

As I am restoring the wipers of my 2.4 litre at the moment I
have a couple of questions which I hope you can maybe help me
with.

As you know the wiper switch has 2 operating modes:
1) Intermittent operation
2) Continuous operation (speed regulated by the knob in the dashboard)

As on all Coupés I have seen the intermittent mode is not working,
though the continuous mode is fine.

Has anybody found out what the typical reason for this is?
Wiper engine? Switch? Relay?

Is there a separate regulator unit for the intermittent mode?
If yes: is there a spare part available?

A lot of questions. but I really hate it when something on my car
is not working

Thanks

Cheers

What I can say so far is that there is a control box for the
intermittent mode close to the glove box. It's a black little box
with some resistors / capacitors etc in it...

I have demounted it and will dismantle it tomorrow to see
if there is anything obvious wrong with it. I have no idea
about electrics but it can't be rocket science to get this
repaired...

...I opened the box a few days ago as promised but I couldn't find any
obvious defects.

By the way: the probability that we can use the corresponding Fiat 124 Spider part is high I think.
I've just ordered the control box for the 124 Spider and I am curious if it will work.
For my taste it looks pretty much the same as the one that was in my Dino.

I will let you know if it works.

Hi, I replaced mine with the Alfa model, and the wipers work again. however, the pot on the dashboard became very unresponsive. I'm curious to know if this happens to you, too. Inside the "black box" is a a heater/resistor element with a bi-metallic contact. It is the heating/cooling cycle that provides the intermittent wiper delay. All in all, nothing that an RC circuit and a transistor wouldn't replace...

I had my wiper motor reviewed and - magically - the intermittent function also worked well as soon as the motor was redone.

@Emanuel:

Interesting. Who repaired your engine, what exactly did he repair and how much did it cost? :D

It is a garage specialized in car electronics close to Zurich, the guy who does the repair is a wizard. He took it all apart, cleaned and changed whatever was broken, checked the entire wiring up to the levers on the steering column, but I have to check about the details. Cost around CHF 600.

Thanks Emanuel, it would be interesting to know if he also replaced the
windings. If so, the price is really good for Swiss precision workmanship :)

Dear Emanuel

May I ask you for the address of the garage close to Zurich, where you got your wiper motor repaired? It seems that the winding is gone in my motor.

Best regards
