A few basic questions

Post by JeremyC »

Hi folks, some of you may know me from the Yahoo list.

I'm just starting the resurrection of my 2.0 Coupe after 15+ years in store so there will be lots of questions over the coming months. To start with:
  • What size battery does the 2.0 Coupe take?
  • The two sensors in the heads, my recollection is that one is for the oil pressure gauge, the other for the fuel pump cut out. Which is which or am I wrong.
  • I'm going to try to turn the engine over by hand at the weekend. I've had the bores soaking in diesel and I'm going to take off the cam covers and have someone watching for stuck valves. Is it oK to turn the engine over (sympathetically) on the crank pulley nut, I know this is not recommended for some engines. Clearly I'm not going to apply alot of force, as much as I can do with a 1 foot socket wrench.
  • I took the air filter off last nights and disconnected the breather hoses at the oil fillers. The stub on one of the oil fillers has what appeared to be some scrunched up brass wire in it, clearly a crude oil trap to prevent too much oil going up the breather. Is this standard or a previous owners bodge (I've owned the car nearly 30 years, I can't believe I've never had that hose off before).

It takes pretty big ones.I have a 90 amps battery and there is still some free space.

You're right. Easiest to find out is to refer to the wiring diagram: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=110
You'll need it anyway.

Trying to answer your questions;
Most car batteries´fysical size nowadays is much more compact than when our Dinos were new
cars. You will easily find a battery model fitting the battery shelf.

Re the battery capacity, I got following advise from a professional car electrics´ specialist many
years ago: -If the car is equipped with e.g. a 60 Ah battery from factory, always use batteries in
"the same range", like 60 - 65 Ah, not bigger, otherwise the charging circuit will keep the charging
current up under very long periods, shortening the alternator´s life dramatically.
I don´t know if this is true, but if your charging system is in working order, my experience is you
will be fine with a 60 Ah battery. (Original size)

The sensor in the right head is the coolant temperature sensor. The corresponding sensor in the left
head is a coolant temperature switch, overriding the right side sender, if the coolant temperature
is dangerously high, then putting the needle to the top of scale, as a warning.
The fuel pump cut-out/low-oil pressure switch is placed on the right side of the engine block,
together with the oil pressure warning light switch.

The crank pulley bolt is tightened at 15 Kgm torque, so if you manage to loose it by turning the
engine over, your engine needs a lot of TLC!
Re the breather hoses from engine to air filter, there is actually some kind of simple filter in
the parts Catalogue - no 4144060. I suspect, today most Dinos are missing these...

This brass wire things in the hoses are original. You find them in other fiats as well and you can get them new as reproduction. They have the function to prevent fire, in the case your carb catches fire, going down into the engine, so the german word is "Flammenlöschspirale" something lire "fire extingisher spiral".

Moving the engine with the 36 nut at the front wheel is OK, as already stated before.
