Wanted: Steering box or maybe Pitman Arm

Post by doublegarage »

Hello,

My 2400 Coupe has a bad steering box (see main thread in Technical forum) - therefore looking for a good used steering box to use or rebuild - main worm-drive components would need to be in good order.

I might have to cut the Pitman Arm off mine as I attempt to rebuild that, so I might also need a good loose Pitman arm.

Thanks,

Hello Richard,

just in case you find no part:

Option 1: maybe a 132 box can be adapted (respectively the holes in the chassis can be adapted to the box). Good 132 steering boxes frequently show up at the bay

Option 2: some 2400 coupes enjoy a ZF power steering (as my car) . The 130 servo box does not fit, the 132 servo box seems to be ok. I will try to find out the ZF part number of my steering box

Option 3: dinoparts offer an electric power steering. The picture does not show clearly if the system includes the box (or contains only the support unit ) , I would guess it comes from the dutch specialist EZ Power Steering.

Good luck!

Hi Ribolla,

thanks, you present some good options.

1) Yes I will keep looking for a 132 box - the dream, I suppose, is that the internal worm-gear parts are interchangeable and would work in the Dino's casing - but I doubt it. Are the ratios the same?

2) I didn't know that there were any factory power steering cars, or therefore that they were made by ZF. Yes your part numbers would be very interesting. At least the ZF company still exists whereas the Gemmer company does not (as far as I know?)

3) Yes I think the DinoParts system comes from the Dutch company and works by gripping/powering the steering-column shaft inside the car - therefore still requires the stock steering box in the wheel well.

As far as I know, there were no factory power steering cars. But I know that some cars have been updated with a customized power steering. If I'm wrong, just let me know ;)

AFAIK, there were no factory power steering cars, but it was a common upgrade to use a ZF steering box plus pump. Fits easily at least in Coupes and drives great! Really a pity that they did not use these parts for serial production, especialy in a car where FIAT did not consider any cost...

BTW: The Fiat 130 system does NOT fit!
