The root cause of Alfasud and Ferrari Dino corrosion is clear so far - poor treatment of the "body in white" for different reasons.

Another reason is a complex body structure with many stiffeners and supporting layers - in general a positive design feature, as e.g. in Mercedes Pagoda SL or Fiat Dino, but unfortunately a terrible humidity trap

The worst examples:
- First series of VW Golf were terrible rusters - same level as Alfasud, but different root cause. Volkswagen was close to bankrupty in 1974, so they simply could not afford proper pre-treatment.
- Mercedes W116 S-Class: my father bought a brandnew one in 1974 and gave it a lot of TLC (as with all his cars). Whereas his 1970 250/8 survived without major corrosion at least until 1985, the W116 started to show brown holes in 1977 and had to be scrapped in 1981.

I can't believe that Volkswagen and Mercedes used "russian steel" in the mid seventies, although there are some rumors.
