Re: Ignition switch Issues
Hello one and all,
I’m a Spyder and Forum newbie.
I’ve just gotten my hands on a ‘67 Spyder that has been in storage for over 30 yrs. luckily the bodywork and paint are both in great shape.
My biggest issue at this time is the keys!
They are lost forever. And of course the wheels are locked not straight ahead.
I haven’t found out If there were two different keys, ignition and all other locks.
Are the keys the same as the Sipea switches used in the 124. I did read that the switches aren’t interchangeable.
Is there a NAmerican source for new ignition switches?
Can you remove the lock set without a key to unlock it?
And last for now, are there any recommendations for new soft ops.
Thanks in advance

Michael,
The Dinos are operated with two keys, one for the ignition lock / switch and one for doors, trunk and glove box.
Unfortunately, you cannot remove the ignition lock without the key, as you have to position the key in a way that internally a bolt unlocks. I am not sure if there is any other way to remove it (without the key) than taking out the steering column assembly and drill it out. Perhaps you find someone who is experienced in unlocking without keys, a key service or a car thief ;=).
Check photos on page one of this thread to see how the lock is built in.

Re: Ignition switch Issues
A good locksmith can "impression" a key; insert a correct blank into the lock, press it rather firmly against the internal pins by just turning the key back and forth, observe the marks the pins have made and then cut the new ignition key. It takes a fair amount of trial and error, you'll pay the locksmith for the house call and his time, but it will work. My key took about an hour for my locksmith "Weston" of Dup-A-Key in San Diego. Now I only go to them for all my key needs. My new Ignition key cost $150.00 four years ago.
There is no need to remove the ignition out of the column for this procedure. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.

Re: Ignition switch Issues
The is someone on ebay selling repro Sipea key blanks which look identical to the original, they weren’t expensive.
I think it’s this one, though I can see if it states Sipea on the back.

Re: Ignition switch Issues
I finally tracked down a used ignition set 90030.
It appears to function and I’ve had the locksmith go over it and make new keys.
Can anyone tell me what these two white wires do, they have been cut off almost at the switch body.?

Re: Ignition switch Issues
I pulled the switch part of the lock set out. The two white wire are not connected to the switch, they continue down into the keyed portion of the lock. That is very strange to me. As there is no “Bianca” wiring shown in the wiring diagram, I’m going to seal these two wires with shrink tube and hope for the best. What’s puzzling is, it looks like original wiring?

Re: Ignition switch Issues
Those wires are typically for a key-in-lock sensing buzzer/alarm.
As far as I know, our cars (edit: DID NOT) have that capability but your switch may be a replacement that was used in more modern cars with such a warning.

Re: Ignition switch Issues
Reviving an old thread here.... Has anyone ever attempted to open up the electrical portion of the Dino ignition switch to clean the electrical contacts... and had any success? The link provided earlier in this thread https://www.mirafiori.com/faq/content/switch/index.html describes the basic process, although it's on a similar (but different) switch. Is there anyone selling just the electrical portion of the switch nowadays? I'm tempted to open mine due to some voltage drop issues but wanted to gather a little info first on what others may have found. It would be nice to have a backup replacement on hand if I totally screw up the original switch... Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks
