How do I remove steering shaft.

Post by 4cambob »

I have removed the uj,the nut and nylon cup washer from below. From above I removed the steering wheel, ignition barrel, indicator mechanism, and shaft circlip and nylon cup washer as from below.
So I am left with the shaft and upper and lower bearings but there is something still stopping it from coming out.
What is the next step.

I suppose you mean the upper part of the steering column, where also the ignition lock sits in.
There are two types of it, the early ones with a spring putting pressure on the bearing and the late type with a nut to adjust the tension in the bearing. I think you have the late one. On this you can adjust the tension a. It if you have play in the steering column.

The bearings sit quite tight in it, so after removing the nuts you have to use a hammer to push the shaft out. It goes only in one direction, I will check when I am in my workshop.

Thanks Thomas,I have the version with a nut and no spring. As the circlip was at the upper end I would guess the shaft comes out upwards.

Hi, I have just taken one apart to see how it works. See in the picture the two versions.

And: it gets out to the lower side, not to the circlip side!
